Our story and purpose.

For 46 years the Smithfield Rescue Mission has been dedicated to helping those in need find answers to breaking the cycle of poverty. Helping women, children, and men in need. Our approach is balanced, reaching the person physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

The Smithfield Rescue Mission has been a proven organization dedicated to helping those in need find answers to breaking the cycle of poverty.

The Mission was established in 1977 by Paul and Margie Olsen. With its first donation—a ten-dollar gift and many prayers, the mission doors were opened in an old mill house on Brogden Road. Over the years God has blessed and expanded SRM and has met the needs of people where they are. SRM is a vibrant ministry that meets the needs of those who are hurting in the surrounding area of Eastern and Central NC. The mission is on the cutting edge of innovative thought in helping those in need through short and long-term programs.

Mission Statement

The Smithfield Rescue Mission exists to proclaim the love of Jesus for those who are homeless and in crisis by providing shelter, life necessities, and life-changing programs to break the cycle of poverty.

Vision Statement

We partner with individuals, churches, and businesses, uniting the community to care for those hurting and in crisis— practicing an integral part of our faith in Jesus Christ—care for those in need.

The Smithfield Rescue Mission is a non-denominational Christian ministry that serves men, women, and children from all walks of life and backgrounds. Though we are founded on Christian principles and love to share our faith with others, we do not expect the people we serve to believe the same or feel compelled to believe the same.
