Meet our people.

  • Ben Olsen, Executive Director

Most of Ben's life, he has worked to help people experiencing homelessness, sharing the love of Jesus through rescue mission ministry. He spent many years observing his parents as they led the mission, and in high school, he helped on staff here, in college he volunteered here at SRM on his summer breaks and was on staff at the Nashville Rescue Mission in Tennessee. Ben spent a few years in hospitality work and sales after college, but it was while working at the Nashville Rescue Mission, that he began to realize God calling him to this work. In 2008 he returned to Johnston County to help revitalize the mission and start new programs to help people here in our area. In his first first few years back at SRM, God used Ben to oversee an expansion that more than doubled our capacity to serve people. His prayer is to see people freed from the things that keep them from living life abundantly, and that people will feel the freedom Jesus offers. You can contact him at Ben@smithfieldrescue.org .

  • Paul & Margie Olsen, Co-founders

In 1977, Paul and Margie founded the Mission with a ten-dollar donation and a prayer. For over 46 years, they have served thousands of men, women, and children through their 50 years in ministry to people in need of hope and healing. Their greatest desire is to see the individual’s lives transformed by the love of God.

Paul and Margie are still very much involved at the mission. They both teach Bible classes and Margie teaches several life skills classes, personal finance, healthy recovery, and other classes geared toward helping people become whole.

Their passion is helping those in need find help and hope to break the cycle of homelessness. They love sharing the message of the love of Jesus!

  • Bobby Hughes, Operations Manager

Bobby worked with us from 2010-2015, and for a few years left to work in healthcare services. He stayed in contact and began to feel God calling him back to the mission, and we were very happy when he came back in 2020! Anyone who meets him and sees him at the mission knows that God has gifted him for this work. He loves helping men overcome problems that keep them from living a healthy life, and encouraging men as he works to make the day-to-day operations at the mission meld with the programs that help change lives. Bobby is an excellent listener and has helped so many men feel better understood and cared for. His experience and his servant’s heart, make him a blessinng to us, the people we serve, and the community.

  • Kayte Reed, Mission Services Manager

Kayte joined us in 2018. She is passionate about women and children getting the help they need, and helping women find hope, and healing from abuse, the past so they can live a healthy, happy life. In the first 2 years she was on staff, her leadership of our women and children’s house helped us increase the number of women and children who returned to independent living by over 40 percent. She has worked in the field of law, as a paralegal, as well as retail. Her prayer is that men, women, and children find peace and freedom in Christ while with us.

  • Tiffany Olsen, Communications and Marketing

Tiffany has volunteered with the mission since 2010 and came on staff in November of 2014 to help oversee the marketing and mass communications of the mission. Her passion is to help the people who are helping others by working in the background to create solutions to bring attention to our cause. Tiffany is a gifted communicator who puts her heart into whatever she does. Her prayer is that her work in communications makes it possible for more people to find hope in Christ
