Each year the Smithfield Rescue Mission gathers all the fixings for Thanksgiving meals, and gives them to families in need throughout Johnston County. Our goal is to make it possible for families in need to gather and celebrate Thanksgiving in their own homes together. From now until Thursday, November 19, we will collect food donations. Or you can donate $25 to cover the cost for a complete Thanksgiving meal.
If you’d like to help give someone in need a great Thanksgiving, there are three ways you can help.
We want to give families in need and on the edge of homelessness in our community the opportunity to make a full Thanksgiving meal in their own home. But we need food donations to make this work! Please deliver these items to the mission by Friday, November 19. Here’s a full list of the items we’ll need:
- Full frozen turkeys
- Boxes of stuffing (such as Stove Top or another brand)
- Instant mashed potatoes
- Gravy (packets or jars)
- Canned vegetables (green beans, yams, corn, etc.)
- Cranberry sauce
- Mini marshmallows
- Dinner rolls (the kind that don’t need to be refrigerated or frozen)
Food Delivery Volunteers
Due to COVID-19, we will be making changes to how the boxes of food are delivered to families. Most of the families will be coming directly to the mission to pick up their food, but some of the people on our list will need to have the meal fixins’ delivered to their home. On Friday, November 20, we’re inviting volunteers to help us deliver the boxes of food to the homes who are unable to pick up the food on their own.
To volunteer for food delivery, please contact Kayte by calling (919) 934-9257.
The boxes cost $25 total to put together. This is a practical way to show love to people right here in your community that need help. You can mail a check to:

The Smithfield Rescue Mission operates 365 days a year, and your donations help make that possible! If you’d like to donate money in order to help pay for Thanksgiving food, or to help with day-to-day operations, go here to learn how.
On Thanksgiving Day, many volunteers sign up ahead of time to help serve a meal to our residents and anyone in the community who wants to join us. Our spots here are limited, so call our office to talk to someone about volunteering at the mission if there are any spots available for Thanksgiving Day (919-934-9257).
The cost of one meal and essential services at the mission is $1.95. That’s not much, but it adds up. If you gave $25, you could feed 13 people. If you gave $250 you could provide 128 meals! Any amount you can give is helpful and will feed people as well as give hope throughout the year. A hot meal will open the door to a changed life!
