Thanksgiving at the Mission

Turkeytastic Community Outreach

Saturday, November 17
9 – 11 AM

This outreach is designed to be a help to people who are on the edge of homelessness and face hardship. Newly unemployed, chronically ill, families struggling to feed their children, elderly people who have to choose between enough to eat and medicines… These are a few of the hardships faced by those we reach out to year round to be a help and be a stop gap. We are engaged with our community everyday and this is an opportunity to help us help more people.

This year we’re continuing our yearly Turkeytastic tradition,  providing families in our community with a fresh uncooked turkey and all the sides to cook a family meal in their own home. By giving these full, unprepared meals to people in need, we’re also giving them the opportunity to spend time with their families, and perhaps enjoy their own Thanksgiving leftovers the day after! But to make sure we have enough food, we need your help!

This year we’re again asking for food donations, as well as volunteers to deliver the food to people who are unable to pick up the food from the mission.

We’ll need 150 uncooked turkeys to make this happen. We already have a few but we’ll need more. stay connected on Facebook and Twitter for our turkey count and other details

If you’d like to help give someone in need a great Thanksgiving, there are three ways you can help.

Donate Food

We want to give families in need and on the edge of homelessness in our community the opportunity to make a full Thanksgiving meal in their own home. But we need food donations to make this work! Please deliver these items to the mission by Wednesday, November 14. Here’s a full list of the items we’ll need:

  • Full frozen turkeys
  • Boxes of stuffing (such as Stove Top or another brand)
  • Canned vegetables (green beans, yams, corn, etc.)
  • Cranberry sauce
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Dinner rolls (the kind that don’t need to be refrigerated or frozen)
  • Dessert pie (already prepared, the kind that does not need to be frozen)

Food Delivery Volunteers

When: Saturday, November 17 at 9 a.m.

Some of the people on our list will need to have the meal fixins’ delivered to their home. On Saturday, November 17, we’re inviting volunteers to join us for coffee and donuts at 9 a.m. and we’ll be delivering the boxes of food to the homes who are unable to pick up the food on their own.

To volunteer for food delivery, please contact Diane or Debbie by calling (919) 934-9257.

Monetary Donations

The boxes cost $25 total to put together. This is a practical way to show love to people right here in your community that need help. You can mail a check to:

Smithfield Rescue Mission
PO Box 681
Smithfield, NC 27577

The Smithfield Rescue Mission operates 365 days a year, and your donations help make that possible! If you’d like to donate money in order to help pay for Thanksgiving food, or to help with day-to-day operations, go here to learn how.

Thanksgiving Day

On Thanksgiving Day, many volunteers sign up ahead of time to help serve a meal to our residents and anyone in the community who wants to join us. Our spots here are limited, so call our office to talk to someone about volunteering at the mission if there are any spots available for Thanksgiving Day (919-934-9257).

Monetary Donations

The cost of one meal and essential services at the mission is $1.95. That’s not much, but it adds up. If you gave $25, you could feed 13 people. If you gave $250 you could provide 128 meals! Any amount you can give is helpful and will feed people as well as give hope throughout the year. A hot meal will open the door to a changed life!
